The 30-minute
Macy’s Independence Day Fireworks Spectacular, this year titled
"The Lights of Freedom," will begin at 9 pm on Friday,
July 4 in two locations on the East River: off Manhattan’s 34th
Street and just below South Street Seaport.
The corresponding musical program will be broadcast on 1010
WINS-AM radio, and WNBC TV will offer a live telecast of
the fireworks show, which will launch 30,000 aerial shells and
special effects.
Prime live viewing locations for the South Street fireworks
are the Brooklyn Heights promenade, the uplands of the piers,
Fulton Landing and Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park.
At 8 pm, the U.S. Air Force will perform a patriotic flyover.
The Macy’s hotline, (212) 494-4495, recommends the Brooklyn
Heights promenade, between Joralemon and Cranberry streets, and
Furman Street between Atlantic Avenue and Cadman Plaza West for
viewing.
The police department advises using mass transit to get to the
viewing areas. For MTA information, call (718) 330-1234.
