One of Sheepshead Bay’s most beloved institutions, Roll-N-Roaster, is marking a major milestone: 55 years of serving legendary roast beef sandwiches. The cherished local establishment, which opened in 1970, has maintained its signature combination of community, comfort and classic charm.

Founded by Brooklyn native Buddy Lamonica, Roll-N-Roaster began as a drive-in restaurant where patrons could enjoy freshly roasted beef made quickly and with care. After Lamonica “gambled on a desolate piece of land” in Sheepshead Bay, the menu has expanded over 55 years, but never deters from its roots. While the menu features cheeseburgers, steak, fish and more, its centerpiece remains its Roll-N-Roast Roast Beef priced at $8.45.

Last month, the restaurant celebrated its anniversary by offering free collectible pens and buy-one-get-one-free deals. According to their Instagram, over 6,000 guests present. The celebration represents much more than a number, but of the memories locals and tourists have made over the years — from summer strolls to late-night drives.

Roll-N-Roaster has become more than just a place to grab a bite — it’s a community hub. Their website notes that it has “been a part of the Sheepshead Bay community since the 60s and has seen the area grow into what it is today. A lot has changed, but there is one thing that has not: Roll-N-Roaster.” Generations of families have made it a ritual to stop at the drive-in, creating a sense of continuity in a rapidly changing neighborhood.

In 2020, General Manager Eric Rodruigez told Brooklyn Paper that “there is a lot of nostalgia.”

“People who moved from Brooklyn to other places, when they come back, this is their first stop after the airport,” he said. “They come over here.”

That same year, on its 50th anniversary, they celebrated a socially distant celebration with 3,000 patrons in attendance.

Despite the difficulties that come with running a neighborhood institution, Roll-N-Roaster has remained strong. In 2022, the temporary discontinuation of their iconic cottage fries sparked outcry among local customers, prompting the owners to diligently bring them back. Now renamed OG Fries, the beloved side dish was briefly halted due to supplier issues; one loyal fan even started a petition to restore them.

As Roll-N-Roaster celebrates 55 years, it stands as a living testament to Sheepshead Bay history, from its classic neon signage to quality roast beef sandwiches.
